What was so annoying about that too was not only how gleeful Rick Warren was about his little piece of dork Christpop spotlight, but how all nightly news anchors were speculating about a new, more modern evangelicalism — which probably doesn’t exist anymore than it ever did before — and how maybe, just maybe, Obama is going to surprise everyone and take a huge minority of those votes even though no one besides a few college junior evangelicals will actually vote for him because he has no better chance, right or wrong, of taking a group of fundamentally conservative white people spread out across the country than a group of fundamentally conservative white people concentrated in one place like Utah or my great home state of Indiana.

I wonder how many levels “material support” includes. Like, what if I served dinner to the mechanic of the guy who drove bin Laden? Would the mechanic and I be guilty of third and fourth degree of seperation war crimes?

In Providence, the police have girded for an attack. Flush with Homeland Security money, the department bought a 27-foot patrol boat to monitor the city’s port, along with an automated underwater inspection and detection system and a portable small craft intrusion barrier.

At police headquarters, the department upgraded a video surveillance system, erected 159 concrete posts and 220 feet of guard rails around the building’s perimeter. Supposed targets for attacks, like rail and air terminals, have been inventoried and assessed, and in some cases, hardened against assaults.

The department acquired a small fleet of S.U.V.’s for emergency response, a bomb containment vehicle, a bomb response canine vehicle, mobile data terminals, scuba gear, trauma kits, underwater camera and video gear, and special protective suits for all officers. With a $5.6 million grant, the department is developing a sophisticated radio system so police, fire and other emergency responders throughout the region can communicate with one another.

Raines is wrong. Most of the news and information people get online is from newspaper and magazine websites. What’s killing newspapers is that they can’t make enough ad revenue online to compensate for the bleeding prints.
