More immigration goodness (PLUS: Barack? Barack who?)

1. I’ve committed to myself that I will not read any presidential election coverage until after the primaries. This makes reading the morning paper considerably easier because I can entirely skip both the politics and the op-ed pages.

2. It does seem now that the Bronx fire that killed one woman and eight children was - can you believe it? - just an accident. Since we don’t blame God or Satan for these kinds of things anymore, we (including me) tend to pick on the government, or some sociological phenomenon, forgetting that sometimes, it’s just bad, bad, really bad luck.

3. Although, if you wanted to blame some sociological phenomenon, you could maybe start with male-dominated Islamic culture. Seriously. What kind of a woman, when the house is on fire, calls her husband?

4. And while we’re on immigration. Ona and I took a little jaunt to Brighton Beach this morning to indulge ourselves in things Russian. On the way back to our Dominican-dominated neighborhood, we passed through Chinatown, which is right near Little Italy. All of which made me wonder: Is there, anywhere in the world, a large population of American immigrants? I don’t mean ex-pats hanging out in Buenos Aires. I mean, for example, those six blocks in Moscow where everything is in English because 10,000 Americans live there and own businesses.

No? Hm. Kind of makes you think.

  1. Holla. check out the new blog…lookin good.

  2. […] It turns out there was more to that Bronx fire situation I posted about awhile back. I made an off-hand comment about male-dominated Muslim culture being kind of a problem, but I was a little more right than I realized. Turns out the husband taxi driver was actually a husband twice. He had two wives living in that building. […]
