I strenuously object to his idea that small corporations will somehow be more virtuous than big ones, or (even more laughably) balance them out. Virtue isn't the issue. Corporations of any size are interested in one thing and one thing only when they get involved in politics: rent seeking. And rent seeking is never, ever good for society. Just because there were holes in the campaign finance dam in the form of PACs doesn't mean we might as well knock the whole fucking thing over and see what happens.

Anyway, no use arguing about it now.

I was pretty upset by the ruling, too, but this article is giving me some pause. You have to get past the "corporations are just collections of people" bit, which is kind of obnoxious, but the part about distinguishing between media corporations and other kinds of corporations was interesting.

What kills me is even former Chief Justice Rehnquist, (a man once accused of intimidating black voters at the polls in the sixties and who wrote a memo arguing against Brown v Board of Education) once warned that treating corporate spending as the First Amendment equivalent of individual free speech is "to confuse metaphor with reality."

I will now light myself on fire.
